Spore is a "massively single-player online" game being developed by Maxis, with designer Will Wright, and published by Electronic Arts Games.

Game concept

Spore is a game of evolution. At the start of a new game the player will be in control of a single-cell organism. Throughout the course of Spore, this organism will undergo numerous changes as it evolves. Creatures will experience several phases of evolution ranging from the Tide Pool phase to the Civilization phase. The player will literally play God with the use of a powerful editor. The editor will allow the player to tweak and customize everything about the creature, the architecture of buildings, vehicles, flora, and more. The player's creature will evolve on a planet full of player-created lifeforms until it develops the technology to create a UFO. Once the player reaches the Space phase, traveling around the galaxy becomes possible. Abducting creatures and terraforming planets are just some of the possible actions within the Space phase.

Content sharing

Spore will send content made by the player to a server, which will the categorize and sort it. Then Spore on another computer can request content of a specific kind and the server will find and send matching content. Content will take very little bandwidth since it is procedurally generated, meaning that only a few variables are sent and then run through algorithms on the local machine.

The content will be represented by virtual game cards, part of what is called Sporepedia. The player can browse all content available in his or her galaxy and choose favorite content, or report offensive content.

Release date

The game has been confirmed for September 7 2008 release.
