Mission Types
(feel free to add more mission types)
Overall the space phase is a sandbox where the player can do what they like, but there are sort of general missions and vague goals which make the game more interesting.
terraforming
Every planet has a rating of its atmosphere and biosphere which reflect how well the planet will harbor colonies and other life. To add atmosphere and biosphere to a planet, as well as customizing its surface, the player can buy different tools. Basic tools can create volcanoes to pump Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere as well as pull in comets to bring water to the plant and create oceans(this is how earth got most of its water). The water will evaporate and add to the atmosphere. Once the atmosphere is up to snuff, a biosphere can be worked on. First plants to creat oxygen and then eventually it can be populated with animals brought from the homeworld or other planets. Terraforming can be fun but it also benefits the player. Recources and funding can be extracted from up and running colonized planets. It may also be possible to sell a planet once its been terraformed.
first contact
Once you've reached the space age and start visiting new planets you may find some with intelligent life. How you greet these new creatures is up to you. A peaceful way is to give a display above their city, such as fireworks. This could lead to peaceful negotiations, an alliance, and/or trade. However if you come down with your lasers blasting away or start throwing around the creatures with your abduction ray you may be met with death rays and missles. How you greet new life for the first time may determine the relationship between an alien race and yours and can effect the course of the rest of the game. It's possible that the aliens could send their own ship to your homeworld and attack you. It's also feasible that you may gain knowledge from a friendly relationship with another race. First contact may be hostile or peaceful, it's all up to you.
